 - Ruled empire at its greatest size
 - Oppressive taxes
 - Enforced Islamic law
 - Gave Bombay to England

 

Mauryan Empire
321 - 232 BC

Ruler: Chandragupta
How:
- 1st king of Mauryan Empire
- killed Nunda King and took over
Government:
- divided empire into 4 provinces with a prince
- high taxes
- spies, waged war
- soldiers protected people
Ruler: Asoka
1st Part:
- waged war
- brought Empire to its peak
2nd Part:
- studied Buddhism/converted
- religious tolerance
- fair treatment of all subjects
- built extensive road system
- used Buddha's teachings of non-violence
- after his death, Empire fell apart
Way of Life:
- taxes burdened everyone
- lived as farmers, mining, manufacturing

 

Gupta Empire
320 - 415 AD

How:
- 1st Emporer of Gupta
- received power through marriage
Ruler: Sumdra Gupta
- son of Chandra Gupta
- waged constant war to expand empire
Rulter: Chandra Gupta II
- "Prince of all Princes"
- high taxes
- waged war to expand
- negotiated diplomatic ties through the marriages of his sons and daughters
Way of Life:
- paid heavy taxes
- work 1 day a month as a tax
- patriarchal
- everyone lived in villages
- merchants
- achievements made in art, literature, math and science
