New York State Learning Standards

Next Generation English Language Arts- The P-12 ELA standards, revised in 2017, were developed through numerous phases of public comment as well as meetings with committees of NYS educators (Special Education, Bilingual Education and English as a New Language teachers), parents, curriculum specialists, school administrators, college professors, and experts in cognitive research. There are also Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects that are specific to students in grades 6-12. The ELA standards are also broken down in the following “at a glance” charts:

1. Grades P-2 2. Grades 3-5 3. Grades 6-8 4. Grades 9-12


Next Generation Math- The P-12 Math standards were developed in 2017 through numerous phases of public comment as well as meetings with committees consisting of NYS educators (Special Education, Bilingual Education and English as a New Language teachers), parents, curriculum specialists, school administrators, college professors, and experts in cognitive research. The standards were recently revised in 2019. 


Social Studies- New York State has five specific content areas for standards: History of the United States and New York, World History, Geography, Economics, and Civics, Citizenship, and Government. The standards for grades K-8 were last updated in February, 2017 and the standards for grades 9-12 were last updated in January, 2015.


NYS Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS)- The standards for grades P-12 were last updated in 2016. The standards are broken down by the follow grade levels: 

1. Grades P-2
2. Grades 3-5
3. Grades 6-8
4. Grades 9-12
