Teaching and Learning

The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, & Professional Development oversees all aspects of professional learning, curriculum development, instruction, and assessments. The East Rochester School District is continuing to focus on supporting our district vision of providing the highest quality instruction to recognize the strengths of our students and meet the needs of all learners.

Curriculum mapping supports and informs the curriculum renewal process. This process provides teachers the opportunities to revisit and revise curricula to ensure alignments are explicit, strong and relevant.

The district has undertaken a comprehensive analysis of what is being taught and the order and depth in which content is covered, identifying gaps and redundancies, increasing overall rigor, and improving the students’ skill levels in all disciplines. A well-organized and conveniently communicated curriculum allows educators to pinpoint curricular strengths and weaknesses by measuring student achievement and comparing it to the instruction program.

The district focus will continue to be multi-faceted: high expectations, a rigorous, connected and consistent curriculum, relevance in instruction and assessments, and the alignment of professional development for our teachers and support staff so that we are able to achieve this arduous challenge of preparing our children to become college and career ready for the 21st century.

Our goal is to enhance an already vibrant curriculum with 21st century skills that each student needs to be college and career ready. Collectively we will look to use our vision statement to guide our work: The Vision of the East Rochester School District is that students will learn through the highest quality instruction which recognizes each student’s strengths, talents, interests, learning styles and rates of learning, using developmentally appropriate methods.
