PROPOSITION VOTE INFORMATION MEETING :
District treasurer/assistant business administrator Staci SanSoucie presented an overview of the 'ER 2008' renovation project, up for vote Tuesday, Oct. 16, and answered several questions from audience and board members.
ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS :
PK-6 principal Harold Leve and 7-12 acting principal Jill Slavny gave their monthly presentations about recent and upcoming activities.
Mr. Leve
* welcomed and congratulated senior Courtney B., who was chosen as this year's student representative;
* showed several photos from the PK and K-6 opening days;
* listed and welcomed the new elementary teachers and staff members (including two ERHS alumni), and noted several re-assignments;
* said the elementary school's theme this year is T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More), and thanked third-grader Rayna M. and fifth-grader Dana E. for designing and building the related hallway display; and
* thanked the PTA for sponsoring an entertaining anti-bullying assembly for the K-5 students.
Mrs. Slavny
* also welcomed and congratulated Courtney;
* showed several photos from the seventh-grade orientation and a day of team-building activities by the incoming freshmen; described the orientations for freshmen, new students, and parents; and thanked those who volunteered for the programs;
* congratulated middle-level counselor John Reitz on receiving a character-development award from the Southeast YMCA, specifically for his dedication to the Project HYPE after-school tutoring program;
* noted the Spirit Week kick-off assembly, held that afternoon, included contests featuring several academic areas; and
* thanked acting assistant principal Brian Touranjoe for his help starting the school year.
l District superintendent Dr. Howard Maffucci
* thanked the teachers, staff, and administrators for a successful opening to the year, especially in light of several late-August administrative changes;
* reported on various topics being addressed by the Monroe County School Boards Association's legislative and labor-relations committees; and
* encouraged residents to keep on top of the upcoming reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind act (especially the funding aspects) and contact their representatives about the importance of education.
BOARD MEMBERS' REPORTS and COMMENTS :
Student representative Courtney B.
* thanked Mrs. Slavny and Mr. Touranjoe for their leadership during the start of the year;
* congratulated the fall sports teams on successful starts to the season; and
* said the Model United Nations club is returning to ER, under advisers Chris Billings and Beth Sheehan.
Board president Kim Jackson
* also welcomed Courtney to the board;
* said there were eight applications for the open board seat, and the new member will be chosen soon;
* encouraged residents to vote on Oct. 16; and
* congratulated Mr. Reitz on his YMCA award.
Tim Henry
* thanked and commended everyone who contributed to the successful opening of school, given the challenges presented by several last-minute administrative changes;
* said the numerous applications for the open board seat indicates residents are interested in what happens in the district and want to contribute to its success; and
* said the 'ER 2008' proposition is sound and responsible, and if approved, district officials will do their best to minimize disruptions, especially during the summer.
Terry Brown-Steiner urged residents to vote on the proposition, noting many of the included items represent routine maintenance and repairs which should be done while NYS Excel aid is available and it's financially beneficial to the district.
Board vice-president Sally Malone
* thanked and congratulated everyone involved in the opening of the new school year.
NEW BUSINESS :
The board approved
* the election inspectors and their chairperson for the Oct. 16 vote; and
* the 2007-08 Professional Development Plan (as required by NYS) and team members Tim Allyn, Bruna Furgiuele, and Catherine Terrell.
