12/18/07 Board of Education Report
ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS:
Mark Hettler of Beard Miller Co. accounting presented the district's year-end audit report for 2006-07.
PK-6 principal Harold Leve and 7-12 acting principal Jill Slavny gave their monthly presentations about recent and upcoming activities.
Mr. Leve
* showed several photos from
-- various kindergarten, second-grade, and third-grade Thanksgiving celebrations;
-- the PTA's Breakfast with Santa, thanking all who volunteered for it;
-- fourth-grader Michael D. learning he was the top seller, and grand-prize winner, of the PTA's fundraiser (Michael earned a six-day trip to Orlando, Fla., for selling $581 worth of Delta Sonic coupons); and
-- Sgt. Jim Peterson leading the elementary students in the Pledge of Allegiance, and thanking those who participated in "Operation: Sending Smiles Across the Miles" -- an ongoing project coordinated by Denise Alfieri's fourth-grade class.

-- the Electric Coffeehouse IX concert (noting Electric Coffeehouse X is scheduled for 8 pm Friday, Jan. 4),
-- Irene Hammons' and Barb Tarolli's 7-12 French students celebrating National French Month,
-- Audrey Taylor's seventh-grade science students presenting their 3-D cell projects, and
-- the 7-12 instrumental and choral winter concerts; and
* congratulated
-- the new National Honor Society members: juniors Jessenia A., Chloe B., Anna E., Rachel G., Kristen J., Claire K., Shayna M., Daniel P., Thomas Q., Paula S., and Meghan V., and seniors Giovanna E., Sean M., and Philip P.,
-- senior Amanda R., who plays french horn and was chosen as ER's representative in the Area All-State Orchestra,
-- senior Marie R., who was named Channel 10's Scholar-Athlete of the Week, and
-- the Students of the Month for September/October (seventh-grader Letizia E., eighth-graders Emily C. and Megan C., freshman Kaitlin S., sophomore Richard P., and juniors Claire K. and Ariana P.) and November (seventh-graders Emily F., Katie G., and Joseph W., eighth-graders Brandon B. and Trey P., freshman Marisa B., sophomore Robert S., juniors Krissy R. and Jesse S.., and seniors Shanna B. and Matt D.).
District superintendent Dr. Howard Maffucci
* briefly discussed three topics being addressed by the Monroe County School Boards Association's legislative committee:
-- the appeal being filed by the county schools regarding a recent court decision in favor of Monroe County's tax-intercept plan (also known as "the F.A.I.R. Plan"),
-- the ongoing reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind act, and
-- the proposed New York state budget, expected in late January; and
* said he plans to participate in a January panel discussion on stipends, sponsored by the MCSBA's labor-relations committee.
BOARD MEMBERS' REPORTS and COMMENTS:
Student representative Courtney B.
* congratulated
-- Marie R., noting her Channel 10 award was a nice way for the Section V champion varsity tennis team to end its season, and
-- junior Matt P. and seniors Aaron K., Nina Q., and Hannah R., who were chosen for the RPO's Holiday Pops concerts; and
* said
-- the NHS members will be volunteering for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign from noon-5:30 Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Perinton Martin's Supermarket, and
-- the Project HYPE after-school tutoring program, coordinated by John Reitz, starts Jan. 2.
Board president Kim Jackson reported on a program sponsored by the MCSBA's information-exchange committee on Languages other than English, noting Honeoye Falls-Lima incorporates foreign languages into its curriculum for students as young as kindergarten.
Lafayette Eaton commended and thanked the crossing guards for their dedication and friendliness.
Tim Henry
* commended Courtney on her public-speaking skills; and
* congratulated and thanked the administrators for their leadership the past four months, given the challenges presented by several late-summer administrative changes.
Terry Brown-Steiner also commended Courtney on her poise.
NEW BUSINESS:
The board
* accepted the 2006-07 audit;
* adopted the 2008-09 budget goals, assumptions, and guidelines;
* approved the suspension of the district's facilities-use policy for the 2008 E.R. Fire Department carnival; and
* OK'd the designation of the Coffeehouse accoustic and electric concert program as a club, and its addition to the extra-classroom activities fund account.
