A Message from the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Howard Maffucci

September 2007 - Welcome to a new school year!

At this time last year, I wrote that once our fuel cell project is completed it will provide the district with much of our electricity, allow us to have power during extended outages, and provide our students with a real alternative-energy teaching station. Well, it’s up and running, and delivering all the advantages as promised.

I also welcomed a new 7-12 principal, Mr. Chris Barker. Unfortunately, Mr. Barker has decided to return to Rush-Henrietta, as an associate high-school principal. (He was their Ninth Grade Academy principal before joining us.) We wish Mr. Barker well, and will miss him greatly.

Mrs. Jill Slavny, our 7-12 assistant principal, will assume the duties of acting principal as the school year begins. Meanwhile, a very familiar face will move over to the junior/senior high school -- Mr. Brian Touranjoe will be the acting assistant principal for grades 7-12. At the PK-6 level, Mr. Harold Leve will remain as principal, and an acting assistant principal will be appointed for the start of the school year.

At the elementary school, we’ll continue our implementation of the state’s Universal Pre-K program, and our focus on literacy and school readiness in our pre-school. We’re also extending the primary literacy initiative into first and second grades.

We’ll also continue to implement SpringBoard, a College Board initiative, in grades 6 through 8. SpringBoard is a comprehensive program designed to help students achieve the critical-thinking, reasoning, and writing skills (primarily in English language arts) needed to better prepare for Advanced Placement courses. This program, which also integrates instructional technology into the curriculum, is one way we’re continuing to encourage more and more of our high-school students to challenge themselves by taking AP courses.

Mr. Jose Correa recently began his new position as the district’s head custodian. His staff is to be commended for its hard work and dedication in helping prepare our educational complex for the Sept. 5 opening. Our permanent staff members, along with the summer staff (most of whom are ER students), deserve a special, sincere “thank you” for their efforts.

The PTA calendar contains useful information about the many activities that make ER schools a vital and exciting part of the community. Parents, family members, staff, and community residents are cordially invited to attend our sporting events, concerts, plays, and other functions. Your participation in student activities is encouraged and welcomed -- remember that your active interest is important to your children, other students, and the success of the district. Please join the PTA, attend its meetings, and volunteer for its many worthwhile events. (Contact information for the officers and committee chairs is included in this calendar.) I also encourage you to participate in school-level or district-wide committees by contacting the appropriate principal’s office or my office.

The calendar also contains the names and phone numbers of the 2007-08 Board of Education members. School board meeting dates for the year are also listed; your attendance and participation at these important meetings, where district programs and issues affecting the district are presented and discussed, is encouraged. Board meetings are also taped for broadcast on ER Community News (Cable 12) -- watch Channel 12 for broadcast times. And, our award-winning district Website -- www.erschools.org -- is updated regularly. I encourage you to check it often!

Finally, we continue to be very proud of our school program, and will always look for ways to improve it. Please accept a special “thank you” to everyone for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns about the district, please contact me at your convenience.

As always, it’s a pleasure to serve the school and community of East Rochester.

Sincerely,

Dr. Howard Maffucci, Superintendent of Schools
