East Rochester ninth-grader Maya DiPane has been accepted to this year’s NYSSSA 2021 School of Media Arts virtual program! The program is run by the New York State Education Department and includes a six-week long class where students are able to investigate new mediums and explore media arts practices, including animation, photography and film/video. The highly competitive program only accepts 30% of applicants in normal years and is an amazing opportunity for Maya.

To apply, Maya had to submit an essay, complete a questionnaire along with a portfolio of her work. Maya included twelve of her photographs in her portfolio, carefully selecting each piece to include.

I lost someone very close to me earlier in the year, before my high school adventure started. I have always been taking pictures off and on since I was seven,” says Maya. “Once I realized that taking photographs would be a way for me to relax and show people the way that I see the world, I took the opportunity. Thanks to that, here I am.”

Maya hopes to gain more knowledge of photography, as well as new concepts and techniques.

At the end of the summer program, a virtual Final Show screening will be shared with family, friends and teachers, as well as the state-wide and national media arts community! “Photography has made such a great impact on my life and I am hoping to be able to show the world what I can do,” she says.

Congratulations Maya!
